Crampon compatibility: B1
The SL M3 has a reasonably stiff flexing sole and the uppers provide enough ankle and foot support for traversing relatively steep slopes. When fitted with certain types of flexible C1 crampons they are suitable for the easiest snow and ice conditions found when hill walking. They are for emergency and occasional use when crossing a short patch of snow or ice, rather than setting out initially fitted for a full days walk.
Sherpa leather
The SL uses 2.8mm Sherpa leather. The extra thickness and durability of this leather is perfectly suited to stronger hill and mountain walking boots, where extra support and resistance to scuffing is important.
Performance Flex midsole
This is a more robust, nylon midsole giving superb support to the whole foot. Its graded design provides a perfect balance between longitudinal flex and total lateral support for walking on rough ground or steep hillsides. Performance flex is used in the top performance hill and mountain walking boots. It requires a short amount of breaking-in but supports and protects the sole from the tiring effect of walking on hard or rocky surfaces. Boots with this midsole can be used with flexible walking crampons.
HS12 water resistant treatment
Until a few years ago, virtually all leathers were traditionally tanned and prepared using natural oils. In the early 1980’s, Scarpa, in conjunction with a leading tannery, developed a specialised tanning treatment which impregnates silicone into the leather, making the leather more water resistant. This treatment is durable and resistant to scuffing and stops the leather from wetting out so easily. It will also dry out naturally much faster than traditionally tanned leathers. HS12 tanned leathers cost more but are well worth the extra cost if you are likely to be using your boots in particularly wet conditions.
